Brown/Browne/Braun DNA Study: Marker Values for Groups No. 60 thru No. 69

The members of each relationship group below (Groups No. 60 through No. 69) are likely as a rule to share common Brown ancestors with fellow group members inside a "genealogical" time frame, that is, approximately since the widespread introduction of surnames in western Europe during the 15th century.

These groupings are strictly tentative, however, and they will necessarily be revised from time to time. What's more, the identification of specific common ancestors for any group will generally depend more upon conventional "paper" genealogy than upon additional DNA testing.

To the extent that there are mistakes in the groupings, we have tried to err on the side of inclusiveness by using selection criteria broader than those employed by many other surname-tracing projects. In technical terms, we view a false negative as worse than a false positive, so we prefer to err toward the latter. One implication is that some of this project's Groups will almost surely lose members -- or even "break down" -- if all their members should eventually upgrade from 12 to 25 or more markers. Such outcomes are most probable for Groups equal or close to the so-called "Atlantic Modal Haplotype" (AMH), as for example Group Nos. 5, 15, 18, 20, 56, 59, 87, 88 and 89. For more information on the AMH issue, see the discussion under Group No. 20.

Criteria for Determining Relationship Groups:

For Haplogroup R1b and its subclades: Members must match 12/12 on the first 12 markers, at least 23/25 on the first 25 markers, or at least 33/37 on the first 37 markers.

For all other Haplogroups: Members must match at least 11/12 on the first 12 markers, at least 22/25 on the first 25 markers, or at least 33/37 on the first 37 markers.

Note on Modal Values within Groups: In cases where a specific marker's modal value is undefined, a value is substituted from among the modal values for all project members with the same haplogroup.

Color coding for Haplogroups:

Green = haplogroup proven by independent SNP test
Red = haplogroup inferred from STR's with high confidence (no SNP test)
Blue = haplogroup inferred from STR's with medium to low confidence (no SNP test)
Black = haplogroup presented with unknown confidence (SNP status not known)

Note 1: The "Anonymous Brown" in this group is a man tested by FTDNA who hasn't yet joined the Brown DNA Study.

Note 2: The assignment of no. 164950 to this Group might be questioned by some experts in DNA genealogy. The method most commonly used for calculating genetic distance, the "stepwise mutation" model, says that 164950 is five steps away from no. 49243. This distance is usually interpreted as signifying no relationship within a "genealogical" time frame. But an alternative counting protocol, the "infinite alleles" model, says these two men mismatch on just three markers -- a genetic distance some observers would take to indicate a probable relationship within the last 500 years (possibly much more recently). A second reason for including 164950 is that two of his differences with 49243 are on the poorly understood "multicopy" markers (no. 5 and the very volatile no. 34). A third reason is that three other men in Group No. 64 have tested at only 12 or 25 markers. If any  of these men should upgrade to 37 markers, his or their new results might be close enough to 164950 to give a match that's less equivocal than the existing comparison with 49243.

Note 3: In view of matches between this Group and several Rose-surnamed men, some researchers hypothesize that the ancestors of these Browns underwent a surname change from "Rose" to "Brown," or that the ancestors of the Roses in question originally carried the "Brown" surname. If any such change occurred, it's unclear with present evidence whether the event is more likely to have taken place in the British Isles rather than in North America.

Note 4: Special thanks to David Wadsworth Brown, not only our no. 18291 but also the long-serving Administrator of the Rose DNA Project, for helpful suggestions about analyzing this Group.

Note 5: The members of Group No. 64 (with the possible exception of the Anonymous Brown) share a "pre-genealogical" common ancestry with a number men who have surnames other than Brown and Rose, thanks to their carrying a DNA

marker of deep ancestry known as "R-U198."  For information, see:  http://meekdna.com/U198dna/

Note 6: The DNA signature of particpant no. 180857 indicates a high probability that he is a "biological Brown" or a "biological Rose,"  that is, his unbroken male-to-male line of ancestry probably traces  back to Brown-surnamed or Rose-surnamed man within the past few hundred years.
