Earl Griffin4 Brown Sr (William E3,
George Raymond2, James1)
was born 03 Nov 1889 in Montague Co., TX, and died 29 Nov 1965
in Phoenix, Maricopa, AZ.
He married Ada Belle Stone 08 Dec 1926 in Hillsboro,
Sierra, NM, daughter of James Stone and Ada Garrison.
She was born 18 Dec 1905 in Roswell, Chaves, NM, and
died 08 Nov 1977 in Los Alamitos, LA, CA.
Earl
Griffin Brown Sr
was the third child in a family of four boys.
His Mother died in 1895, when he was 6 years old.
In the spring of 1899 his Father took the two older
boys with him on a horse buying trip to Elk City, OK.
His Father, William went out with some men to look at
some horses, but didn't return with them. They said there had been a flash flood & he drowned.
However when his body was found his money belt was
missing and murder was suspected.
After
being orphaned, several relatives claim to have raised the
boys, but the tales from all are of being on their own.
The youngest, Miles and his Grandmother Lavinia Brown
were listed in the 1900 Greer, OK Census in the household of
John W. & Jemima Wilson.
Jemima was Lavinia's daughter.
It
isn't known exactly where Earl was for the first few years
that he was on his own. He
told of riding race horses & working as a horse trainer.
About 1903 in Tucumcari, NM he was found living in a
box near the railroad tracks by A. J. “Alex” Street, the
town sheriff. He
lived with that family until 1910 when he joined the Navy (or
Merchant Marines).
After
his Navy years he lived in TX, CO, NM and most of his life in
AZ.
