 Generation No. 1

1. James Brown was born 1791 in NC, and died Aft. 1846 in AR or TX.  He married Nancy (White) Barefoot Abt. 1818 in Williamson Co., TN.

She was born Abt. 1794 in Edgecombe Co., NC, and died Abt. 1837 in MO.  She was the daughter of Daniel White and Martha (Nellamnes) White.

James Brown married Nancy (White) Barefoot about 1818 in Williamson Co., TN.  She was the widow of Jonathan Barefoot, who died 10 Dec 1814.  At the time of Jonathan’s death Nancy had son Daniel b. 1813 and 2nd son Jonathan was born in 1815.  James and Nancy moved to Wayne Co., MO and are listed in the 1830 Wayne Co., MO Census.  He moved then to Van Buren Co., AR about 1837 probably after Nancy died.  James is listed in the 1840 Van Buren Co., AR Census.  Also he is listed n Van Buren Co., Tax Rolls 1842 – 1844 and in the Methodist Church as a member prior to 1847.  James was born in NC , but don’t know which county.  We continue to check in Surry, Wilkes, Ashe, Edgecombe and Bertie, NC.  Associated families (Hartzog & Maddox) in TN, AR & TX had also come from Northwest NC and some of them had come from Berks Co., NC.  James may have moved to TX with several other associated family members in 1847/48.  We have not been able to find a death record for him in AR or TX.

Earl Griffin Brown Sr was the third child in a family of four boys.  His Mother died in 1895, when he was 6 years old.  In the spring of 1899 his Father took the two older boys with him on a horse buying trip to Elk City, OK.   His Father, William went out with some men to look at some horses, but didn't return with them.  They said there had been a flash flood & he drowned.  However when his body was found his money belt was missing and murder was suspected.

After being orphaned, several relatives claim to have raised the boys, but the tales from all are of being on their own.  The youngest, Miles and his Grandmother Lavinia Brown were listed in the 1900 Greer, OK Census in the household of John W. & Jemima Wilson.  Jemima was Lavinia's daughter.

It isn't known exactly where Earl was for the first few years that he was on his own.  He told of riding race horses & working as a horse trainer.  About 1903 in Tucumcari, NM he was found living in a box near the railroad tracks by A. J. “Alex” Street, the town sheriff.  He lived with that family until 1910 when he joined the Navy (or Merchant Marines).

After his Navy years he lived in TX, CO, NM and most of his life in AZ.
