Second Generation
3.
James Mark BROWN (Robert) was born 2 Mar 1834 in
Barnard Castle, Durham, England. He died 23 Jan 1908 in his
home at 1205 Lamar St., Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., Texas
and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Wichita Falls, Wichita
Co., Texas.
From Mrs. Mavis Strom Johnson, great-great
granddaughter of James Mark Brown:
James Mark Brown stowed away on a ship from
Liverpool, England, bound for America in 1857.
He was caught and given a choice to go back to
England or join the U.S. cavalry.
So he joined the cavalry (in January 1858?) became a
corporal, spent some time in Maryland, and was eventually
sent to Texas. He
started in Austin, then lived in Pflugerville (probably
around 1876). In
December 1885, he migrated to Bowman Community, which is now
the site of Lake Wichita near the city of Wichita Falls.
(Lake Wichita is a man-made lake that was constructed
at the turn of the century.)
As an adult, James Mark was 5'7", which was
considered tall at the time.
After the military, he apprenticed as a carpenter,
but didn't like it.
At some point, he moved to Archer County and became
Justice of the Peace there.
His name is on the cornerstone at the Archer County
Courthouse in Archer City, Texas.
His parents, Robert and Phillis Brown, probably never
left England. According to James Mark Brown, Jr.,'s grandson, James Mark,
Sr's., parents owned a shipping line.
From the Wichita County Archivist, Leta
Watson:
James Mark Brown was a seaman who was cast adrift
after two shipwrecks, one of which occurred near Galveston.
He came to America at the age of 20.
In 1857, he enlisted in permanent company, Carlisle
Barracks, Pennsylvania for a five-year term, from which he
received an honorable discharge.
He apprenticed as a carpenter for seven years.
He and his family moved to Illinois, where he was a
recruiting and drill officer.
In 1866, he returned to Carlisle, re-enlisted for
five more years in Company B, 4th U.S. Cavalry.
In December, 1867, he was transferred to Corpus
Christi, Texas, then to Camp Verde, Austin headquarters, and
Fort Concho [where he was located on the 1870 census].
Later in 1870, he was transferred to Fort Richardson,
and discharged there on 25 Oct 1871.
In 1875, he and his family moved to a farm in
Pflugerville, 16 miles from Austin, near Round Rock.
In December 1885, he arrived in Wichita Falls.
In February 1886, James bought 400 acres of land in
the Bowman Community, near Lake Wichita.
He had very little crop the first year due to the big
drought that occured between 1885 and 1887.
In 1899, James moved his family to a farm in the
Faith Village area of Wichita Falls.
From Wichita County Beginnings:
J. M. Brown, after navy service, came to the United
States when he was twenty.
He served as an apprentice carpenter, but about 1857
he enlisted in the army for a five-year term.
During the Civil War, he recruited and drilled in
Illinois. Reenlisting
in 1866 he spent five more years with the Fourth U.S.
Cavalry. In
1867 he was sent to Texas, serving at Camp Verde, Austin,
Fort Concho, and in 1870 at Fort Richardson, being
discharged there in October, 1871.
He brought his family from Pennsylvania to Austin. He served as a carpenter there until in 1875 when he settled
the family on a farm near Round Rock.
In December, 1855 he brought the family to Bowman in
Archer County, where he had bought 400 acres of land.
He served as a county commissioner in Archer County.
In 1899 he moved to a farm in Wichita County, in the
present Faith Village area.
At Carlyle, Pennsylvania, he married "E.E."
(____-Dec. 1915) and they had five sons and four daughters.
Note the discrepancy in arrival dates to
the U.S.: "Wichita
County Beginnings" and the Wichita County Archives
state that James Mark came to the U.S. when he was twenty
years old. (Most
likely, the author got her information from the archives.)
However, Mavis Strom Johnson states that he was
twenty-three when he arrived in 1857.
