William Brown Esq.
Of Bonavista, Newfoundland, Canada
DOB ……………. Unknown
Place of Birth ………..Unknown
Note
A couple of sources state that he
was born in Poole Dorset England but no documented proof.
Another source says he was from
Devon shire England
( The Diocesan Magazine April 1926
page 143 Photo copy in my possession K.B.)
DOD…………..Oct 2, 1793
Age …………..Unknown
Place…………..Bonavista ,
Newfoundland
Note
One source ( Mr. Robert Brown of
Mich. USA now deceased ) told me that at one time around 1965 he
recorded the age from the tombstone and age was given at 93
years. This tombstone is no longer readable and I have checked
it a dozen times since 1985 but I have not been able to read the
age !
The age of 93 yrs does not seen
plausible considering his wife Mary had a son Robert P. Brown
born in 1793 !
Notes on William Brown Esq.
On July 6, 1760 Governor James
Webb appointed William Browne Esq. as his deputy or surrogate
for the Districts of Placentia, Trinity, Ferryland, Bonavista
and parts adjacent.
( from Placentia Court records at
Arts & Culture Library in St Johns )
I have been unable to establish a
positive link between this William Browne Esq. Surrogate and
William Brown Esq. of Bonavista.
This William Browne surrogate
appears in many records and sometimes his name is spelled with
an e and sometimes with no e.
In June of 1765 a William Brown of
Bonavista is appointed a guardian of a nephew of a James Sanders
( James Sanders will )
He was most likely William Brown
Esq. but not proven.
In October of 1767 a William Brown
of Bonavista was ordered by the Governor to either pay for
Charles Bridgemens passage back to England or to provide for him
for the winter. ( Colonial Office records )
He was most likely William Brown
Esq. but not proven.
On Nov. 6 1786 William Brown of
Bonavista purchased property in Bonavista from Joshua Foquet
( copy of this agreement has been
in the Brown family ever since )
He was William Brown Esq. of
Bonavista
On Sept 14, 1886 Governor Elliot
appointed William Brown of Bonavista and four other persons to
investigate Magistrate Elias Langdon
( Colonial Office records GN2/1/A
)
He was most likely William Brown
Esq. of Bonavista.
On Oct . 25, 1787 William Brown of
Bonavista is appointed as a Justice of the peace for Bonavista.
( Colonial Office records GN2/1/A )
He was most likely William Brown
Esq. of Bonavista
>From 1755 to 1800 there were at
least 4 William Browns in Bonavista Bay
1. William Brown Captain of the Benjamin wrecked on a voyage
from St Johns to Greenspond Nov 1755 ( Trinity Court records )
2 William Brown who wrote his last will and testament in
Greenspond dated Oct. 27 1759 ( Public records office England
Prerogative Court of Canterbury)
3. William Brown the father of George James and Francis Brown
all of Bonavista
circa 1780 ( Church records and other sources i.e. will of
George Brown of Poole )
4. William Brown Esq. who married Mary , our William .( My own
research etc )
His Wife was
Mary ( last name unknown )
Note
Her last name might have been
Porter or Pudner or Green or Burton.
They named their last son Robert
P. Brown and this Robert was a witness to a Pudner Last will &
testament in Bonavista.
Robert P. Browns son Robert Brown
named his son Robert Porter Brown in 1854
Joseph Brown son of William Brown
Esq. Left 100 pds to his uncle William Burton
( Will dated 1819 ) and he left
100 pds to his aunt Jane Green

married Ann Shearing on May 6,
1821 at Bonavista
Robert and his family stayed in

( Bonavista Anglican records ,
legal documents , headstone etc )
Note
The known children of William and
Mary Brown are clearly identified in various documents, i.e.
Wills, legal documents, church records , land transfer
agreements , Bible records etc all of which I have photo copies
in my possession.
Other possible children might be
Jane Brown who married a Coombs, John Brown who died but there
is no documented proof to add these persons to the family.
Additional Note
It is possible that William Brown
Esq. was married to another woman previous to his marriage to
Mary, but I have no documented proof of this marriage and
if he was married previously he might have had other children
and this might explain the presence of Browns on Pools Island ,
Fair Island and Fogo area but I have no documented proof
of this theory.
The documented proof of William
and Mary’s children starts with an legal agreement dated Nov.
17,1814 and states “ we the surviving sons and daughter of
William and Mary Brown of Bonavista “ So any other children of
William and Mary were deceased before Nov.17, 1814 and any
children of a previous marriage of Williams would not have been
mentioned in this agreement.
James Brown son of William
& Mary Brown of Bonavista, Married Mary Skeffington on December
3 , 1811 at Bonavista
Born March 1, 1781 at Bonavista (
from James & Mary Browns Bible ) died March 1859 at Bonavista

Note
There was a James and Mary Brown (
her last Name unknown ) on Vere or Fair Island from around 1831
to at least 1852 and these to are often confused with James and
Mary nee Skeffington of Bonavista.
The James and Mary of Fair Island
might be James of Bonavista brother of George and Francis and
son of William and unknown wife.
This James married Mary Hurdle on
Nov 17 1827 but I have no Proof that they are the Fair Island
James And Mary
To my knowledge there is no
relationship to William Esq. of Bonavista

Bonavista died and is buried in the old church yard in Bonavista
.
There is a Henry and Anna or
Hannah Brown of Fools or Pools Island and their first child Mary
was baptized 1814 on fools Island.
It is highly unlikely that Hannah
wife of Henry Brown son of William and Elizabeth Brown of Kings
Cove would give birth at the tender age of 11 years old.
I have no documented proof that
Henry Brown of Pools Island is related to William Brown Esq.
