George BrownE of Greenham

George Browne of Greenham, Berkshire, England, 1600s, will proved at Oxford by his wife, Olive, on 9 Jan 1677. Her will proved by Benjamin Brown their eldest son, April 12 1681 at Newbury, Berkshire.

Attached is his descendant chart. You will see that at the end there are four brothers who all emigrated from Berkshire in the 1800s, one to Australia and three to "North America".

Now I am descended from New York immigrants in the 1600s and they seem mostly to have been non-conformist Christians from England and northern Europe; Presbyterians, Dutch and German Calvinist and such. But the Browns had been Catholics and tradition has it that they were implicated in the Gunpowder Plot in the early 1600s and their land confiscated. Anyway, they appear to have become Anglicans pretty quickly, that is Church of England, and so probably went to the southern states, but that is conjecture of course as we have no record of what they did in America until we find genetic cousins. But their names are at the end of the notepad report that I have attached and I have written "emigrated to ..." so that they can easily be identified. I hope this is some use. There are a lot of them and of course the girls will not have descendants with Brown dna but I didn't know how to keep them off the report.

In case you can't face the quantity of English connections I have put two little reports giving the names of John Brown of Hungerford whose sons it was that emigrated and his descendants that I know of - pitifully little, and a report of his direct ancestors which of course my husband shares. But these are the facts that the American cousins will be interested in.

We know what they did for a living, we even know what some of them looked like, certainly in the 1800s. Let me know what is of interest.
